Frequently Asked Questions
It was actually Whitney's idea (she's my wife, and we call her the "Essential Help Ninja" of GuitarSuccess4U.) We wanted to find a totally unique way to equip guitar players as they offer their musical gifts to the Lord. We also wanted to offer something that I wish I had had when I was getting into the guitar. We want to see you realize your potential, and this is how we do it.
Many of our members are beginners. At GuitarSuccess4U, we assume no prior guitar or music knowledge. We leave no one behind. But we do cover a lot of ground early on that can be reviewed for later use. This is a great place for beginners who are committed to serious fun. For beginners, we recommend the monthly membership.
It’s a term we use to describe something that may be challenging, but is very worthy, and also enjoyable in the process. We’d rather do something that takes a bit more work sometimes, than to take the easy way every time. Some of the best music is waiting on the other side of hard work. We believe a good guitarist and musician gives the full measure of care to his/her craft.
We assume no prior music knowledge, but we guide you every step of the way, gradually introducing concepts to equip you to read music on multiple levels. By the time you reach the Literacy Stage of GuitarSuccess4U, you’ll be primed and prepped to accelerate your reading of notation, tablature, and lead sheets. We believe we stop learning to read music when we play or sing our final note at the end of our journey. We are always learning to read music at new levels.
As long as you’re motivated, teachable, and a self-starter, we recommend that you join the annual (or monthly) intermediate membership. This will allow you to access any of the lessons and expert interviews, and to jump to the content that you want to learn now.
That depends on how much progress you want to make. The weekly video lessons average about 30 minutes long (some are shorter, some are longer.) If you practice 5 days a week and want to break up the lessons, you could spend 6 minutes a day watching, and the rest of your practice time playing. Or you could watch an entire lesson one day, and practice the rest of the week.
It's all about showing up consistently, and sometimes, when you get into practicing, the time goes by more swiftly, and before you know it, you've practiced for 30 minutes.
The GuitarSuccess4U members who get the most results are the ones who practice at a regularly set time each day. I recommend practicing for at least 15 minutes, 5 days a week. As you might imagine, practicing longer (like 30 or 45 minutes a day) will get you faster, more significant results. I don't recommend practicing more than an hour at a time without a break.
Yes! I'm a passionate follower of Christ, and my faith influences everything I do, especially music. People who go through the lesson content and come to the Zoom calls will sense this immediately. Many of our members are worship leaders, Christian songwriters, or they desire to be. If you're not a follower of Jesus, you can still join this membership, but be prepared to be surrounded by people who love the Lord and want their love for Him to shine through the music they play.
I’d say that someone who is not teachable, or who has “been there, done that” is not going to thrive here. Someone who is tentative and noncommittal will not find this to be helpful to them.
Younger students tend to need more guidance; this experience relies on a member's initiative as a self-starter, so it's not ideal for kids who haven't yet cultivated the self-discipline needed to steadily go through the material.
Also, if someone already has a guitar teacher, I would encourage them not to join us, but instead to stay with their teacher and to learn all they can.
Lastly, as a Christian, I’m working to cultivate a community that desires to “stir up one another to love and good works” (Hebrews 10:24), so I’m encouraging people who serve Christ to join us.
Your GuitarSuccess4U membership can be a part of your continuing education, so if you have a church/worship department expense account, we recommend paying your tuition with your church card. We also have worship leaders in our community who pay their own way. Please remember that this membership is licensed for individual use – a worship director who purchases a membership needs to use it for himself/herself, and not share the login information with team members.
We have a 30-day, 100% money back guarantee. We want you happy, satisfied and excited to move forward.
I’ve created an experience that allows for some very unique and powerful guitar concepts I’ve never seen taught before. I offer multi-modal learning (video, audio, transcript, worksheets, quizzes) for maximum implementation and retention.
We have a community where we share ideas, victories, and help each other with challenges. Multiple guest experts add tremendous value to the experience.
I make myself available to everyone through group Zoom calls, and also in our member portal, to make sure questions are attended to.
With the annual membership now available, you can set the pace, and jump to the topics of your choice, thereby customizing your approach.
We want this experience to be the guitar journey that exceeds expectations you didn't even know you had.
Absolutely! We provide video, the audio mp3, and the full transcript for every lesson. We also provide full-color worksheets in multiple music formats (chord shape, notation and tablature; strumming arrows, rhythmic notation and counting, etc.) There’s even a monthly quiz that helps you reinforce the knowledge you’re acquiring.
They bring in all sorts of outside wisdom beyond what I could offer. I’ll include a few tidbits: electric and acoustic collaboration, pedal board design, health and posture for standing and seated play, finding a groove pocket, transposition, artistry, stage presence, confidence, guitar repair and care, and so much more. Trust me - the wisdom of these experts is staggering.
We don’t currently offer this, but remember, at less than $1/day (81 cents a day with the annual membership), each member is still paying a fraction of the cost of one-on-one guitar lessons.
GuitarSuccess4U is for you as an individual, so we ask that if a married couple wants to join, that they each have their own user ID. This allows each of you to track your own progress, and allows us to continue to offer this amazing experience.
As long as you remain a member in good standing (your payment information is current, and you are abiding by our code of conduct), you have 24/7/365 access to all the unlocked materials (and if you pay annually, you have access to everything.) Members whose payment lapses, or members who leave the membership, will no longer have access to the content.
***Once you register, you are encouraged to stay with us for the long game...members who decide to leave part way through the experience, who later want to rejoin, will need to start over, and may need to enroll at a higher monthly rate. Members who join now will be locked in at the current rate; their tuition will not increase.
Yes! We offer an all-access experience for intermediate members, for just $397/year (or $1.09/day). This is a savings of $71/year off of the intermediate monthly member rate.
Yes, please! Head on up to the toolbar and click on “Sample Lessons” for an assortment of free mini-lessons.
As a teacher, I try to address multiple age demographics and learning styles, but I tend to attract adults who are in their late 20s and beyond. Having said this, we do have a few members who are in their teens, and the youth who show self-discipline and dedication are making good progress. Parents who are looking to gift this membership to their kids are encouraged to stay in close touch with them, and to encourage and hold them accountable.
I used to have a roster of 50 private students with a waiting list. The GuitarSuccess4U model allows me to have a greater impact, and gives the students the freedom to enjoy the content on their own time. I may begin offering limited one-on-one Zoom lesson slots in 2022, but this option will be exclusively reserved for members of GuitarSuccess4U.
Typically, guitar lessons are one-on-one with a teacher, whether in person or over Zoom/Skype/FaceTime, etc. GuitarSuccess4U is not a one-on-one model, although it’s designed to feel very personalized as you go through the lessons.
Guitar lessons are very specialized – you and your teacher work together through a “hands on” experience (some people prefer this learning model, and we support that.)
GuitarSuccess4U is highly organized, can be enjoyed on your time, includes a community, and a whole roster of guest expert interviews, which would not be practical or possible in a guitar lesson scenario.
Also, if you have a guitar teacher, you two may need to consistently try to figure out what to work on. Here, the plan is all laid out strategically with our 6-stage Success Path.
Lastly, GuitarSuccess4U is a screamin’ deal – currently the tuition is $29/month or $297/year – which amounts to less than $1/day. Private guitar lessons of this quality are about $75/lesson, or $300/month. Our experience is a fraction of the cost of one-on-one lessons.
Each month is broken up into four lessons. The first lesson is a Topical Lesson. The second lesson is an Encouragement Lesson, where I take time to share a story and provide some intentional encouragement, as well as a quiz. The third lesson is another Topical Lesson. The fourth lesson is called a Relevance Lesson, which brings the entire month together and shows you how you can apply everything you've learned that month. In addition, occasional Bonus Guest Expert Lessons will unlock throughout the Success Path.
If you’re willing to invest regular time each weekday, no matter what time that is, day or night, this will work for you. That’s the beauty of this model – it’s on your time. There are seasons where some of our members need to watch fewer lessons and then watch more later, but as long as someone is a member in good standing (their payment information is current and they are abiding by our code of conduct), they have access to everything that has unlocked…they can take it at their own pace. This is definitely an advantage over scheduled guitar lessons.
I like to say to my members that the lessons are where you get to know my mind, and the Zoom calls are where you get to know my heart. If you have a schedule conflict, you don't have to be a part of them. However, everyone who comes usually leaves very encouraged. The calls are only 30 minutes - we like to keep them short and sweet. And no one is required to play the guitar during the calls - we mostly chat, answer questions, celebrate wins, and we laugh a lot. Sometimes we play music games with prizes, and once in a while I bring in a guest expert for a live discussion. The Zoom calls are a huge highlight of the GuitarSuccess4U experience.
In the beginner membership, content is unlocked weekly, so members are able to steadily move through the content.
In the intermediate membership, all the content is unlocked instantly – it’s an “all-access” experience.
There are pros and cons to both, but if you want to be able to jump around and focus on specific topics, we recommend joining the annual (or monthly) intermediate membership.
We don't have a "pause" option. However, you do have options
For the beginner membership, lessons unlock at a weekly pace. You can go through them as they unlock, or take them more slowly (they will continue to unlock weekly.)
If you want to go faster than the pace that the lessons unlock, we recommend joining at the intermediate level so you can get access to everything and jump to the content you want to focus on.
Beginner members who want to discontinue and return later will have to start over, possibly at a high rate. Members who remain enrolled get to lock in their rate.
Yes…but one word of caution. We’ve had members join who were “gifted” their membership, and most have not followed through with consuming the content. It’s an interesting dynamic; if someone pays their own way, they tend to pay more attention. If you’re going to give this experience as a gift, consider carefully whether the recipient will be enough of a self-starter to get the most out of the experience.
We would ask that you not do this. We've poured literally thousands of hours into creating this material. With this in mind, we humbly request that you honor our work by paying for your tuition, and if you wish to discontinue, please let us know. Then, if someone else you know wants to join, we ask that you kindly send them to the enrollment page to pay for and create their own account. This will allow us to continue offering this amazing experience.
Respectfully, no. This content is copyrighted, and is exclusively reserved for individual members of GuitarSuccess4U.
